Does Posting Bail Mean the Charges Are Dropped?

No. Posting bail changes a person’s custody status. It does not dismiss the criminal charges or determine the outcome of the case.

Washington’s release rule specifically addresses release pending trial. A person may therefore be outside jail while the criminal case continues through the court system.

The case may later be resolved through dismissal, plea, trial or another lawful disposition, but those decisions are separate from the decision about pretrial release.

What Is Required After Release?

The defendant must continue to appear whenever required and follow all conditions contained in the court’s release order.
